Plain Talk gives parents the tools they need to address a variety of issues that are a part of pubertyand adolescence. It is offered in both English and Spanish in a variety of settings. Although the entire curriculum takes four hours to cover all the topics, it is flexible and can be provided over a shorter or longer time. The curriculum has been developed to specifically meet the needs of parents of 4th through 8th graders but other activities have been created that are appropriate for high school parents and parents of younger children.
In the 2002-03 school year, Plain Talk served over 500 parents at 28 schools and community organizations. Plain Talk can be sponsored by a PTA/PTSA, parent’s group, community organization or individuals who would like to offer it to other parents.
Plain Talk does do pre- and post-class evaluations and three-month follow-up surveys of parents. 100% of parents who have participated in Plain Talk say they would recommend it to other parents and at three months 80% of parents say they’ve had at least one discussion with their children about sex. Participants in Plain Talk have positive things to say and sponsors appreciate the effort.
